Gosaikunda Lake is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva, the god of divine power while thrusting his Trishul (holy Trident) into a mountain to extract water in order to cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. It is also believed that after several years of meditation he took a bath at Gosainkunda to acquire the purity of his soul. Hence, Hindus on the full moon day follow rituals at the lake and take baths to wash away the sins they might have done over their lifetime.
